happy new year
This term students will be focusing in on story elements. This is characters of a story, the setting of a story, the problems that arise and finally a solution to the problem. I have many string writers in this class so looking forward to what they will generate for ideas. I love this aspect of language arts as they have to use their imaginations for creating their stories!!
SPELLING
I use the word spelling, but we are really working on sight word writing and recognition.
Reading Groups
Reading groups will start soon and I am so happy to have Mrs. Diane Dean (our Literacy Coordinator) in our class again this year assisting with this task. These groups will allow the students to interact and work on their skills while sitting with myself or one of the other individuals within our classroom. At this point I want to stress the importance of the home reading program. This helps your child to refine the strategies that we work on in the class. If you have any concerns regarding your child's reading please do not hesitate to get in touch with me! I would love to talk to you about your concerns.
Reading Groups: You will notice that a sheet regarding home reading has been sent home. This is a record sheet that you keep at home for the month and return at the end of the month. It allows your child to fill in each day how many minutes they read. Having a visual around at home on the fridge will remind your child that they do need to continue to do home reading (everyday). They will get more out of and grow a joy for reading if encouraged by parents and loved ones at home. Your support is worth a lot to the future of your little one.
Practice at home: Going over the alphabet, talking about words, counting and the sounds of the alphabet are important things and can be practised at home. We will continue in the classroom, but at home work can be fun for learning.
Daily 5: Diane Dean (District Literacy co-ordinator) will be in our classroom on a regular weekly basis to help facilitate this program and help with guided reading groups. The program encourages students to become independent readers while instilling a lasting love of reading. We continue to work on building our stamina in hopes to reach 20 minutes of uninterrupted reading. Ask them about stamina and what it all means.
Home Reading: This program will be starting Monday September the 26th. Please look for your child's reading book. The agenda will be inside a plastic bag along with this book. This book will come home for one evening, returned the next day to exchange for a new one. If they come home with the same book that is okay to begin with. Re-reading is very important not only for comprehension, but for helping with reading skills. At the same time I would like to see them read a variation of the books and not just picking the same book because they have memorized it. Helping your child sound out the words and practising at home is a way to spend some one on one time with your child. Sharing together in this exciting time.
Word Families: We continually work on building our word wall (sight words) and working on word families. We have been focusing on the an, and am, word families and we will continue to add to these families. Making a game around the formation of these sounds and the combination of letters can be fun and challenging for your child.
